Jarrett Tops OMA Nationals Podium Again In Illinois
Article and Photos by John Gasso
The Race is a very simple name for a racing tradition that is anything but simple. The event has existed since 1976. The 2007 installment continued the tradition of providing a very tough course that challenged racers and left them smiling at the end. Team FMF Suzuki racer and now four time Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals series champion Jimmy Jarrett (FMF Suzuki / Moose Racing / Dunlop) battled New Zealander Paul Whibley (Honda / Moose Racing / Pirelli) for nearly two and one half hours before taking the win.

Andy Lagzdins emerged victorious at DP Brakes “The Race”
Article and photos by John Gasso
Maryland Pro ATV racer and current series points leader Andy Lagzdins (Honda / Moose Racing / ITP) crossed the finish line at the Bike Barn Saturday with a twenty second gap over three time OMA Nationals champion Rob Zimmerman (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) to win the event that is simply titled The Race. Zimmerman and Lagzdins battled for four laps of the twelve-mile course in Fenton, Illinois. Matt Lindle ( Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) took the holeshot after a wide open run across the corn field, but lost the lead later in the race. Lindle would have to settle for fourth place behind Rob Weis (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis). The Stratford, Wisconsin racer managed to hold off Lindle to take the final DP Brakes podium spot with only a six second margin.

The Photo that makes the cut... How NOT to cross logs.

DP Brakes Presents
"The Race" Since 1976
How it all began...
In 1976 Bill Gusse promoted his first race, "The Illinois Cross Country Championship", or simply called "The Race (TM)". It would be a 100 + miles (averaging 120 miles) in late October. A $1,000 overall purse would be put up, and back then… that was the highest overall purse for an offroad competition.
Past Champions...
A few past champions and competitors of "The Race" consists of legends like... John Martin, Ron Ribolzi, Chuck Woodford, and Jeff Fredette, currently the all time record holder for this event. Charles Mullins made a winning debut last year, battling with Jarrett and Jason Thomas over 65 miles.
Confused???
Many confuse “The Race” with “The Moose Run (TM) ”; there is a tremendous difference! Some consider “The Moose Run” as an over-the-top, Nazi infested training camp for hard-core dirt bikers only. And rightfully so, that is the mission behind “The Moose Run”. However, “The Race” could not be anything but the complete opposite… the course remains much of the same, but the overgrown muck, slimy jungle in which makes “The Moose Run” is gone when “The Race” kicks off. The same terrain in the fall is like being in another state. No going the long way around the fields, it’s a straight shot from one timber, across the harvested fields, and right into the next set of timber. No chicane, after chicane here! Logs… well if you ran “The Moose Run” and didn’t see them, you will this time of the year, so no worries there. This year will run a 12-13 mile loop for ATV’s for 1 ½ hours and 2 -- 30+ mile loop for m/c’s! For times/classes/fees see, Event Info. Free camping from Friday to Sunday. Event map for gas stops & spectators will be available Sunday morning at registration.
Spectator fees: Adults-10/day or 15/wknd -- Kids 10 & under-Free!
For more information call 817.320.3184 or email gusse@unitedoffroadracing.com
Don’t miss “The Race”…. Since 1976… for a reason!
A dirt biker’s all time favorite RACE!!!

Rekluse Spring Creek ATV Top 3
Andy Lagzdins is our Rd 6 ATV winner. It was an excellent race. Andy trailed for the first few laps; Matt Lindel took up front for awhile leading the pack through the perfect track conditions... Rob Zimmerman would soon take over controling the day until a flat rear tire. In the pits replacing the flat would prove imminent for Andy... Andy took over and rode off uncontested.

2006 OMA Top Ten Class Results ATV
A Brief Look Back @ “The Race” & 2006…
“The Race” weekend started off with Moose Racing’s Rob Zimmerman putting the finalizing touch on his 3rd consecutive championship. HooRah! To RZ!
OMA sends our best to OMA/MXC racer Adam Reed #24! And hope for a speedy recovery! Darn the luck to Adam who was currently leading “The Race” at the time and running 2nd in the MXC Series points.
Todd Krupinski who was leading right off the start went mud bogging early on in the race. He went home. Todd wrapped up 2nd in the OMA Series for 2006.
Kenneth Staake took 3rd at “The Race” and 3rd for the 2006 Series. Congrats to our ATV Pros!
Not mentioning Jason Grundey would be just wrong! The amazing utility atv racer who is completely dedicated to OMA and his utility atv! 7 wins, 1 second. He’s looking for some competition… know of anyone, sign them up!
And as everyone knows… Pro Am Yamaha’s Charles Mullins took the win, finishing 4th in the points for the 2006 Series, with missing 4 rounds. Next year Charles will be running OMA’s and challenging JJ for the Parts Unlimited $10,000, along with a few others. Fun Mart/Moose Racing’s Jason Thomas stepped up onto the podium with his best finish of the year, 2nd. Jason wraps up 3rd in the Series points. Watch for Jason to step it up from his 2006 OMA debut next year. Jason Thomas Racing.com
And then there’s JJ…
JJ has made some “serious” changes for 2006, back racing the GNCC’s, pulling in some decent finishes with his new found confidence winning OMA's. He can go fast, and he can finish. His new outlook on his career has shown in his results. He’s enjoying the races again, OMA... 5 wins 1-2nd, 3-3rd's, and $16,000 later! We wish him the best reigning his OMA Championship in 2007. Also wishing him Gold @ the 2006 ISDE! Jarrett Offroad
Justin had bad luck at “The Race” after a crash mangled the front of his bike and put him back to the truck early. He’s battled and battled for that win, never gave up, but was consistent with 2nd’s and top 5’s. Earning him 2nd in the points for the 2nd time. Placing on the podium at the GNCC’s was a highlight for Justin. Williamson Racing
Alan Westerfield… what can say, his reports speak for themselves. And if you can’t have fun with his reports, lighten up. They’re for fun and Alan sure does spend time writing the reports to entertain us. Alan did get an astonishing finale finish at “The Race”, 4th, and in the Series, 5th.
On behalf of holeshot winners… David Stickel (30-39 A), Brett Mayer (Open B), OMA thanks Gordon Zaagman for the (2) $100 holeshot awards for “The Race”
OMA would like to send a Grand Thank You to Parts Unlimited - Moose Racing, Maxxis, Pirelli, Ten Racing, DP Brakes, Motion Pro, Wiseco, CRD, ITP, Scott/Acerbis, Motorex, and Fun Mart Cycle Center for their 2006 sponsorship and support!
